 La escasa gratitud de estos días

El horizonte

El Horizonte, Santo Domingo RD.- Las tantas deslealtades y traiciones me motivan a escribir sobre lo que ocurre hoy día, que es todo lo contrario de lo que me enseñaron y lo que viví desde mozalbete, cuando se privilegiaba la solidaridad y la reina de todas las virtudes humana, como expresaba mi padre, era la gratitud.
Si algo profesaba mi padre era el agradecimiento. Lo tuvo como norma de vida, nunca olvidó los favores recibidos y, como gran internacionalista que fue, hizo de la solidaridad semilla que plantó en toda América. Testigo diario y fiel de lo que aquí digo, solo contaré a modo de ejemplo algunos casos de su pródiga virtud.
Inicio con los recuerdos más vagos, los más lejanos, cuando apenas tenía 10 años de edad. Recuerdo como hoy que mi padre, ya en la clandestinidad por la atroz persecución desatada por el gobierno balaguerista en atención al desembarco del Coronel Caamaño en el 1973, demandó a la cúpula del PRD y su entonces líder máximo, el Profesor Bosch, que se le permitiera llamar al pueblo, convocando una movilización general para evitar que asesinaran al “Coronel de Abril”.
No poder hacerlo ante las diferencias que surgieron en el seno de la dirección partidaria, fue uno de los detonantes principales en la división de los blancos de aquel entonces. Sé de primera mano que no poder contribuir a evitar la muerte de Caamaño, laceró profundamente el alma de mi padre, cuya impotencia ante tal hecho fue una de muchas causas que le hizo renunciar 3 veces como Secretario General del PRD.

De hecho, por el agradecimiento que le tenía, jamás le disputaría el liderazgo a su mentor y compadre Don Juan Bosch. De primera mano sé que las dos primeras renuncias fueron rechazadas por el Profesor y que la tercera, realizada por mi padre desde su escondite en la casa familiar del matrimonio de Don Caonabo Fernández y Doña Nilda Socias, no llegó a su destinatario -que era el profesor Bosch, por supuesto- sino que fue hecha pública al llevarse, sin la autorización de mi padre, a un periódico de circulación Nacional de la época. Esa publicación hizo detonar por los cielos la frágil unidad partidaria. Por respeto a su memoria no mencionaré el nombre del amigo de papá que la filtró al periódico.

Dos hechos constantes y claros en lo narrado hasta aquí son el sentimiento de agradecimiento de mi progenitor hacia su mentor, primero, y que hizo “de todo” para tratar de salvar la vida de Francis sin tratar de competir con su maestro.
Por cierto, mi padre llevó en su alma, durante toda su existencia, profundo respeto y reconocimiento por el matrimonio de Don Caonabo y Doña Nilda y a sus hijos, por haberse arriesgado a protegerlo en aquellos momentos.

Llegado al gobierno en 1978 mi Padre reciprocó el trato recibido con su amigo del alma, Fernando Álvarez Bogaert, cuya casa fue allanada sin conocimiento alguno de mi padre. Cuando eso ocurrió, desde que se enteró mi padre se apersonó de inmediato en muestra de apoyo y exculpación con su amigo, ante semejante acción. En los difíciles momentos de los despiadados 12 años del balaguerato Don Fernando le sirvió a papá como un amigo fiel, a pesar de que al hacerlo se exponía a la furia presidencial y a la de los incontrolables de esos tiempos.

De igual manera lo hizo mi Padre con el Mayor General Neit Nivar Seijas, quien, en más de una ocasión, le salvó la vida a mi progenitor mandándolo a esconder mientras toda la estructura militar de la época lo buscaba. ¡Oh paradoja, el propio jefe de la Policía Nacional utilizando a su íntimo Salomón Sanz para salvar la vida del opositor perseguido! Igualmente, mi padre le guardó a Neit agradecimiento de por vida.
En todo esos años difíciles, durante las décadas de los 60 y los 70, hubo alguien que usó todas sus relaciones, que al parecer eran muchas, para impedir que matasen o deportaran a mi padre. Ese fue el rumano-estadunidense Sacha Volman, quien apadrinó a mi hermano Tony. Si hubo una relación de hermandad, solidaridad y pródiga de afectos recíproco fue ésa, la de Sacha Volman y mi Padre, digna de un guion de película dado lo arriesgada y temeraria que fue.

Papá, forjado en las luchas más difíciles, supo desde muy temprano que la amistad verdadera era más que una hermandad de sangre, porque en esos tiempos se jugaban la vida a diario y los amigos, los de verdad casi nunca se traicionaban, porque la lealtad era una norma obligatoria de convivencia. La practicó mi padre a diario, utilizando los pocos peros reales amigos que tuvo, tanto los cercanos a Balaguer como otros, a todos los cuales también luchó, en su momento, para salvarles la vida, sacarlos de prisión o gestionarles ayudas económicas a los que se encontraban en el destierro.

No fue una conducta restringida al país. Que va, en el campo internacional también. Por ejemplo, durante el primer gobierno del PRD (1978-1986) fue mi Padre quien dio mayores muestras de solidaridad con el liderazgo progresista mundial, pero sobre todo con el de Latinoamérica: gestionó recursos y todo tipo de apoyos a líderes de la Internacional Socialista, para colaborar con sus campañas en diferentes países. Por eso cuando esos líderes llegaban al Poder en sus respectivas naciones, reciprocaban con afectos y distinciones especiales a mi progenitor. No eran hijas de efímeras lisonjas sino de la mayor de las solidaridades.

Comprendí la gigantesca estatura política de José Francisco Peña Gómez en el año 1984, cuando estando como Cónsul General en Panamá recibí una llamada de papá diciéndome que llegaría a la nación istmeña, para que lo acompañara a Nicaragua. Así lo hice y junto a una amplísima comitiva fuimos a la tierra de Rubén Darío. Sabía desde hacía mucho tiempo, que mi padre mantenía relaciones estrechas con la Internacional Socialista y con los sandinistas nicaragüenses, así así como de todo lo que hubo que hacerse para sacar la oprobiosa dictadura de los Somoza de ese país. Pero yo jamás imaginé ver a todos los comandantes de la revolución sandinista rindiéndole honores a mi padre. Tuve la oportunidad de escuchar, durante ese encuentro, que la salida de la dictadura fue obra de Fidel, Torrijos y Peña Gómez. En aquel tiempo creía que solo habíamos gestionado recursos económicos para la causa de la libertad y la democracia, sobre todo como resultado de campañas de recolección de fondos como la de “un peso por Sandino”. Sin embargo, en ese momento descubrí que la solidaridad de mi Padre no tuvo límites, que ayudó a ocultar a muchos de los perseguidos en todo el mundo y utilizó sus vastísimas relaciones en Europa para conectar a los perseguidos con el liderazgo de la época, muchos de los cuales ocupaban cimeras posiciones gubernamentales.

Creí que su solidaridad llegaba hasta ahí, como digo. Entonces me enteré de que papa logró que un hombre tan conservador como Don Antonio Guzmán, presidente de la República Dominicana cuando ocurrían las luchas contra la dictadura somocista, le regalara a la causa un gran arsenal de armas, algunas viejas pero utilizables, incluso metralletas Cristóbal. Al momento de entregarlas, el Presidente Guzmán le dijo a mi padre que “lo que estaba haciendo el amigo … que no lo supiera el Presidente”, una particular forma de hacerle entender que no se trataba de una colaboración oficial sino de ayudar a una causa política. ¡Loor a tan digno acto realizado por Don Antonio!
Cómo verán, la solidaridad no tiene límites. Así debiese ser la gratitud. En aquellos tiempos no solo había solidaridad entre grupos de una misma ideología, que va, la había también hasta entre los contrarios, como cuando Marc Bazin, uno de los principales líderes de la derecha haitiana y de la confianza de Jean Claude Duvalier, impidió que se fabricaran documentos de nacionalidad haitiana para para falsamente crear la idea de que mi padre había nacido en Haití, obra de adversarios de mi padre que utilizaron tan bajo recurso para negarle hasta la nacionalidad a uno de los dominicanos que fue mayor orgullo de nuestra nación. En esos tiempos, se reitera, había respeto, solidaridad y gratitud hasta entre quienes profesaban ideas diferentes. ¡Ah, qué tiempos aquellos!

Para todo ser humano la solidaridad es una necesidad, pero para quien ejerce el oficio de la política es una obligación. Por eso mi padre, pese a todo, defendió con todas sus fuerzas a Salvador Jorge Blanco en medio de la persecución de la que fue objeto a la vuelta del poder del Doctor Balaguer.
Para la familia de Don Juan mi padre siempre estuvo disponible, para lo que fuese necesario. Trató como hermanos a sus hijos, porque mi padre le agradeció toda su vida al Profesor la oportunidad que le dio de estar a su lado. Por eso, en el año 1990, pese a las diferencias políticas con su maestro, se decidió sin mayores condiciones a ayudarlo a ser presidente de nuevo. Le fue a ver para decirle a su antiguo mentor que le apoyaría para que ganara cómodamente. Solo el radicalismo de algunos cercanos del líder del PLD impidió que eso se materializara, negándole la oportunidad al profesor Bosch, su propio líder, de llegar al poder de manera segura. Nunca entendimos el rechazo a tan noble y generosa oferta de mi padre hacia su mentor.
Tuve que llegar a mi alianza con el Partido de la Liberación Dominicana para saber que la causa esgrimida por quienes evitaron la llegada de Bosch por segunda vez a la presidencia, fue que en la alianza PLD-PRD, el perredeismo sacaría más votos. Se entendería que llegaron al poder por “el buey que más jala” y eso fue inaceptable para algunos, aunque se tratara de una estrategia equivocada, que impidió la unidad de las fuerzas liberales de la nación, contra el nefasto sector conservador de entonces.

En este nuevo mundo light, la solidaridad ha desaparecido, ante el creciente individualismo y la falta de miras del naciente liderazgo. La gratitud, que cómo expresaba mi padre es la reina de todas las virtudes, es ahora tan escasa que es casi inexistente. Los políticos de hoy no reconocen ni valoran los años de entrega a una causa, lo invertido en los momentos difíciles en las escaseces, el sacrificio de dejar las actividades privadas para dedicarse a fortalecer un partido o candidato.
La gratitud no solo ya no existe, sino peor aún, a quienes se les debe gratitud se les paga con abyectas traiciones, cuando menos con olvido. A esta generación de políticos amigos de la lisonja, que auspician el oportunismo, se les olvida el pasado porque solo les importa el presente, y si piensan en el futuro, con exagerado pragmatismo piensan que con dinero comprarán el apoyo de los incautos que utilizaron ayer.

Si eso solo se expresa en un trato indiferente, o en la negación de una simple cita o un empleo bien ganado, imagínense si fuera como en el pasado, cuando en la política los compañeros se jugaban la vida.
Hemos caído en la más vulgar de las indolencias, incurriendo en la más vil de las acciones: pobre el mundo y de mi país, donde cada día, atónitos, vemos cómo todo lo bueno que se hace se paga con un daño. Serán que los políticos de hoy tienen el “síndrome de Lucifer”, de manera que al llegar al poder todo su éxito hace que se les convierta en un infierno la vida a los que solo les sirvieron.
