La escasez de gasolina vuelve a afectar a Haití, cuyo gobierno acumula una importante deuda en concepto de combustible con la proveedora Novum, que mantiene un barco cargado frente a las costas de Puerto Príncipe desde hace un mes a la espera de que se satisfaga el pasivo.
La compañía no hará entrega del carburante que tiene en la embarcación hasta que el Estado haitiano se haga cargo de la deuda que supera los 60 millones de dólares y, aunque se han producido contactos entre la Administración y la empresa para llegar a un acuerdo, fuentes del Gobierno informaron a Efe de que el desembolso no se producirá hasta dentro de unos días.
Mientras, la crisis energética afecta nuevamente a la vida cotidiana de la población y esta mañana en Puerto Príncipe cientos de personas salieron a buscar gasolina, cuya escasez se suma a la falta de suministro eléctrico, generando malestar.
El conductor de una camioneta que se presentó como Carlo Jocelin relató a Efe que no puede trabajar desde hace dos días porque no puede encontrar gasolina. “Es una locura que este país no pueda funcionar bien por un mes y sin que haya una crisis. Entiendo muy bien a la gente que abandona al país pese a arriesgar sus vidas”, manifestó.
Mientras, proliferan los enfrentamientos entre bandas armadas en varias zonas en la capital, como Cité Soleil, Grand Ravine, La Saline, hostilidades que ya han causado varios muertos y que se llevan a cabo con total impunidad.
La cuestión energética deriva de la emergencia económica en la que se encuentra el país, el más pobre de América Latina, y que ha ido empeorando desde 2018, aunque hasta el momento el gobierno del presidente Jovenel Moise no ha presentado un plan para salir de esta situación.
La inflación se situó en el 17 % en febrero y el gourde, la moneda nacional, sigue perdiendo el valor frente al dólar, coyuntura que se ha agravado tras las masivas y violentas protestas registradas en febrero, y que han provocado un clima de incertidumbre y tensión social.
En dichas protestas, convocadas por el Sector Democrático y Popular, una de las facciones más radicales de la oposición, murieron 26 personas, de acuerdo con la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH), si bien la Policía no ha ofrecido datos sobre el número de víctimas.
A resultas de la presión generada por las manifestaciones, la Cámara de Diputados aprobó en marzo una moción de censura contra el primer ministro Jean Henry Ceant por la falta de respuesta al agravamiento de la crisis económica, cargo que asumió Jean-Michel Lapin días después.
El Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) había prometido una ayuda de 229 millones de dólares al gobierno, pero la crisis de gobierno provocó una pausa en la entrega del dinero.
Mientras, proliferan los enfrentamientos entre bandas armadas en varias zonas en la capital, como Cité Soleil, Grand Ravine, La Saline, hostilidades que ya han causado varios muertos y que se llevan a cabo con total impunidad.
Estos barrios de Puerto Príncipe habían disfrutado de cierta tranquilidad en los últimos años gracias a la presencia de la Misión de las Naciones Unidas para la Estabilización de Haití (Minustah), operación de paz que estuvo en el país durante doce años, hasta octubre de 2017.
Finalizada la acción pacificadora de las tropas desplegadas por la ONU en el país, llegó otra misión del organismo internacional, de proporciones muy inferiores en efectivos, conocida por las siglas Minujusth, y cuyo mandato finaliza el próximo 15 de abril.
